![]() They are not only weapons but also symbols of social status, honor, and craftsmanship. Historical and Cultural Context: Katanas hold a special place in Japanese history and culture, being the primary weapon of the samurai warrior class. In comparison, other swords may have various grip and guard designs, depending on their origin and intended use. The guard, or Tsuba, is usually round or square and features intricate designs that reflect the culture and artistry of Japan. This allows for greater control and power when wielding the sword. Grip and Guard: Katanas have a long handle, typically wrapped in a traditional Japanese style with cord or leather, designed to accommodate a two-handed grip. Other swords may be forged using different techniques and materials, depending on the region and time period in which they were made. This process results in a strong, sharp, and resilient weapon. In contrast, other swords, such as European longswords, may have straight, double-edged blades that are suited for both cutting and thrusting.Ĭonstruction: Katanas are crafted using traditional Japanese forging techniques, which involve folding and differentially heat-treating the steel to create a blade with a harder cutting edge and a softer, more flexible spine. The curvature of the blade allows for more effective slashing motions and improves the sword's overall cutting ability. Here are some key differences between a Katana and other swords:īlade Shape: Katanas have a distinct, curved, single-edged blade, which is designed primarily for cutting. A "Katana," on the other hand, refers specifically to a traditional Japanese sword, characterized by its unique features and design. The term "sword" is a general term that encompasses a wide variety of bladed weapons used across different cultures and historical periods.

Now the token of the parent process moves to its own end event. When the subprocess token arrives at the end event, it is consumed, which completes the subprocess.Within the subprocess, a separate token is born which runs through the subprocess from the start to the end event, but the token of the parent process waits until the subprocess completes. The token runs through the task and arrives at the subprocess, which causes the parent process to create an instance of the subprocess. The parent process starts, and a token is born.Visualize a token that behaves as follows: This means that sequence flows are not allowed to exceed the boundaries of the subprocess, which not every beginner knows, and which becomes a problem when a subprocess expands. The next sequence flow starts at the right edge. The sequence flow of the parent process ends in both cases at the left edge of the subprocess. This is, however, the less important option. That means process segments remain localized, and you can attach events too. Yes, it can be helpful to have your subprocess modeled and expandable directly from the parent process. In other words, it supports the first option above. ![]() The most important thing is that your tool provides for linking and that you can usefully navigate through the diagrams. This can result in sluggish performance with a complex diagram, and it can be visually nasty. Expanding the subprocess requires that all the adjacent symbols in the diagram shift to make room. The only difference is the plus sign, indicating a stored detailed sequence for the subprocess:ĭirect expansion may seem appealing, but often it is not useful in practice. Both tasks and subprocesses are part of the activities class and are therefore represented as rectangles with rounded corners. A subprocess describes a detailed sequence, but it takes no more space in the diagram of the parent process than does a task. The possible top-down refinements or bottom-up aggregations mark the difference between true process models and banal flow charts, between sophisticated BPM software products and mere drawing programs.īPMN provides us with the subprocess to help with the expanding/collapsing view. Then you have to develop a detailed description, so that you can analyze exactly where the weak points are or how you’ll have to execute the process in practice. You have to rough out your processes so that you can get the general ideas in place and recognize correlations. When modeling your process landscape, you don’t have this luxury. ![]() The examples in this tutorial either deal with simple processes, or they diagram complex processes superficially so that the models fit on one page. One thing to remember is that if you strive to harmonize your functional and technical process models to achieve a better alignment of business and IT, you inevitably face this type of process modeling whether you use BPMN or not. We will show the usefulness of this new thinking by example. In the medium and long terms, however, avoiding pools denies you a powerful device for increasing the significance of process models. That’s traditional, and it’s a pragmatic solution during, say, a transitional period that allows your co-workers to adapt. You can eliminate pools and work just with lanes, modeling the message exchange as normal tasks as shown before. What does that signify, however, for purely functional process modeling, in which you also describe processes not controlled by such a process engine? There’s no general answer to that question. Have you heard of service orchestration in connection with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA)? That’s almost exactly the task of a process engine, except that these services are not only fully automated web services they also can be tasks executed by human process participants as directed by the process engine. So the process engine equates to the mysterious, almighty process conductor. ![]() In that world, the process engine controls all tasks in the process, even though different task managers may execute them. Even though BPMN lanes look very much like those of other process notations, they represent an entirely different way of thinking, which we attribute to BPMN’s origin in the world of process automation. It reveals a basic principle, however, that you must understand. That seems complicated – and you don’t have to choose this method for practical modeling. ![]() This mod brings civs from Civilization 5 and Civilization 6 into Europa Universalis. Have fun and play! ![]() ![]() This module scans your site and tells you what work would be needed before your site is fully compatible with Drupal 9. To assess Drupal 9 readiness, a module called Upgrade Status has been created by the Drupal community. How much work will my site need to be Drupal 9 ready? And of course, there are some modules that have no Drupal 9 compatible version. This can be an unavoidably time-intensive process due to the sheer number of modules involved. This means to upgrade to Drupal 9 a large percentage of a site's community modules will require upgrading and testing. Updating modules requires testing and, when they break, remediation. It is normal for the majority of 3rd party modules in a site to not be upgraded for significant periods of time. Whilst any given module may routinely be updated to a later version over the course of a website's life, there is no particular need to do so unless a security release is published, or specific functionality from a newer version is required. What we've found is that whilst upgrading Drupal's Core is indeed relatively simple, the issue lies with the dozens of 3rd party modules a typical Drupal website has.Īll these modules must be upgraded to a Drupal 9 compatible version. For example, Warrington & Co and the Warrington Business Exchange. Now that Drupal 9 has been out long enough to be considered stable and production-ready, we've updated some of our client sites from Drupal 8 to 9. Typically, this would be around half a day's work. Upgrading from Drupal 8 to Drupal 9 has been advertised by the Drupal Steering Committee as relatively pain-free, with the same level of complexity as upgrading from Drupal 8.7 to 8.8. This move requires large portions of Drupal to be re-written to accommodate it, creating the Drupal 9 release and triggering the end of Drupal 8. Drupal 8 uses Version 3 of this framework and that is scheduled for end of life in November this year, forcing Drupal to move to Symfony version 4. Like any modern software package, Drupal is built on top of several other code libraries, which are known as the project’s “dependencies”. The largest of these dependencies is the Symfony PHP framework. For sites to remain secure, they must upgrade to use Drupal 9 beforehand. When this happens Drupal 8, and all Drupal 8 community contributed modules, will no longer be updated. The other option is to install the contributed versions of the extensions when you upgrade the code to Drupal 10, before running database updates.! Warning Drupal 8 is set to be end-of-lifed on November 2nd, 2021. For example, if you are using Bartik as the default theme and CKEditor, then switch to Olivero and CKEditor 5 before upgrading to Drupal 10. One option is to stop using the deprecated modules in Drupal 9. This includes the Seven admin theme and the CKEditor module (for CKEditor 4). Several extensions (modules and themes) are deprecated in Drupal 9 and removed from Drupal 10. If you have custom code and/or themes, you should also confirm they are not using any code deprecated in 9.5.x or earlier for removal in 10.0.x, prior to attempting to upgrade. This will simplify the upgrade process and avoid dependency issues when following the Drupal upgrade steps.įor example: in composer.json, you would modify "drupal/remove_http_headers": "^1.0" to "drupal/remove_http_headers": "^1.0 || ^2.0" In this case, it is possible to update your project's composer.json file to include both the version required by D9 and the new version required by D10. Some modules may only be compatible with Drupal 10.Read Help contributed modules prepare for Drupal 9 for more tips. Check the module's project pages for Drupal 10 plans as most key modules provided that. If your site has contributed modules which are not yet compatible with Drupal 10, you should cooperate with module maintainers and offer help where possible to make sure updates happen. Use Upgrade Status to check their compatibility. They will also still be compatible with your Drupal 9.4+ site. Main version – compiled with MSYS2/Mingw.Currently, there are 5 different Windows versions. Other nice things that came out of the Vulkan driver being supported on Mac is that we provide HDR support now on Mac for the Vulkan driver.Īnyway, onto the point. Perhaps it hits more optimal codepaths in the MoltenVK implementation because the Vulkan video driver is more well optimized than the Metal one. The current Vulkan MoltenVK implementation in RetroArch Mac is actually quite a bit faster than the native Metal video driver right now. This allows us to just set the default video driver to Vulkan, which should guarantee a high level of performance and also compatibility with cores that provide a Vulkan hardware context. In doing so, we could reasonably assume that the Macs capable of running this OS should have at least a GPU with support for the Metal 2 graphics API. This meant that we could go with our Metal/GL universal build that targets macOS High Sierra (10.13). Steam on macOS requires you to have at least macOS El Capitan (10.11) installed or later. It might be introduced at a later undisclosed date. This build is not provided by our buildbot right now as our buildbot infrastructure lacks the development tools to build it. This is a PowerPC version targeting macOS/OSX 10.5. Well, technically, there is a third version. It does not provide Vulkan or Metal driver support because of the minimum OS requirement. It provides OpenGL (3.2 core context) support (because Lion was the first macOS version to support OpenGL 3.2 and higher). This is a more pared-back, stripped-down version. Second version is the Lion (10.7 and later) version. This build has OpenGL, Metal and Vulkan/MoltenVK drivers, it has slang shader spec support, and is generally considered the most full-featured build. We also call this the Metal/GL universal build. Main version is the High Sierra build (10.13 and later). We provide two macOS versions right now (because we are as ever all about being backwards compatible): The Steam Mac version was a good opportunity for us to establish some minimum baseline system requirements to make sure that RetroArch on Mac would run well out of the box. That being the case, recently we believe that in order to improve the out of the box enduser experience, it is perhaps necessary to start making some general baseline assumptions on what endusers realistically are using in terms of hardware. ![]() The degree to which we push this is quite irregular in the modern day software industry but we believe it differentiates us from the rest of the pack, and in a good way. It’s one of our definite pet peeves and something we’re quite proud of. RetroArch pushes the concept of backwards compatibility to an absolute extreme. It’s basically like a development diary where we discuss future plans for upcoming versions and what we have been thinking about doing. Expect irregular blog posts like this, whenever something is on our mind that we want to share. The British Accent (Received Pronunciation) Interestingly, Americans with a Northern Midwestern accent often use “eh” as well. The phenomenon is known as “Canadian raising” and it’s why the famous pronunciation of “out” and “about” sounds like oot and aboot to foreign ears.Īnd the Canadian “eh”? Linguists aren’t 100% sure where it comes from, but it likely has roots in immigrants from the British Isles. The main difference is how Canadians will speak some diphthongs ( a sound formed by the combination of two vowels in a single syllable) higher than their American neighbors. The Canadian accent is most closely related to General American English with similar rules for pronunciation and accent. ![]() The Canadian accent, eh? It’s a bit of a mystery, eh? Not so much. For a deeper dive into the whole spectrum of American accents, keep reading here. This shift, which is most pronounced in young people, makes words like “back” sound like bock, and “lit” like let. Īnother famous American accent is the California accent, which is distinct from other accents with its marked vowel shift. For example, words like “cry” or “high’” sound more like crah and hah. But it probably goes without saying that Southern Americans are most famous for their “ Southern Drawl” - a way of speaking that sounds slower and with prolonged vowel sounds. Similarly, individuals who grew up in the South will also drop the R frequently, so “here” sounds like heeyuh. Sometimes they’ll drop the R altogether, which is why “New York” often sounds like New Yoahk, or “car” sounds like cah. For instance, Americans from New England or New York generally speak with a less pronounced R than the rest of America. The United States is the biggest (native) English-speaking country in the world, so it should be no surprise that there are many American regional accents with lots of variance between them. This unusual sound is called an “ash” and is distinctive to their accent. ![]() What differentiates the American accent the most from other English accents is how the short A vowel (like in cat) is pronounced. For instance, water becomes wadder, flatter sounds like fladder, and so on. Americans with the general accent will also often pronounce the letter T in the middle of a word more like a D. (You might not notice it if you’re an American, but people from other countries sure notice your strong R pronunciation). Think of any American friend or celebrity, and then think about how they pronounce words like pearl, car or court. The general American accent is known for how rhotic it is - that is, how strongly the R sound appears in spoken words. The American accent is often divided into two classifications: the general accent (yes, that’s really what it’s called) and the regional accents. Let’s start with one of the most iconic and arguably influential accents: the American. Let’s get going - or g’arn, as the Broad Australian accent would say. This guide doesn’t seek to explain why accents are so powerful, but why and how they’re different. It would seem that accents have an endless supply of emotional power, political power and physical power (if you find one especially sexy). Any traveler will know there is something truly comforting about hearing the accent of your home country after an extended time away. It doesn’t just change from country to country, but from person to person, with qualities as unique as the voice that carries it. |
